Coming to America

Brede and Karen SANDER, along with their children, Brede Jr. and Anton, and Brede's daughter, Gunne (Jane) left Norway for America in 1853. The Grue parish records indicate that they relocated on 8 Apr.

1860 US Federal Census: Brede Bredesen Family

The 1860 Census shows the Brede SANDER family living in Madison Township in Winneshiek County, Iowa. Apparently they were using the patronymic name for a surname and the census taker was not a particularly great speller.

1870 US Federal Census: Brede Bredesen Family

Of interest in the 1870 Census is that the SANDER family is listed with the Ole Hermanson family.

Jane SANDER was married by 1870. Anton was actually 19 and obviously not female. I have not yet found a census record for Anna in 1870. However, since Anton was attending Luther and also appears in a separate 1870 entry, I suspect the census taker got the name wrong and "Anton" should have read "Anna," (who would have been 16 and female). Two new additions to the family included my great grandmother Henrietta and her younger brother Bernt. Apparently Brede was also employing two helpers, Erik Erickson and Karen Olson.

Brede Bredesen SANDER, Jr.

Brede SANDER, Jr. was born 17 Oct 1848 in Grue, Hedmark, Norway and baptized on 26 Dec 1848 according to the Grue parish records.

Brede Jr., his parents, and his siblings migrated to America in 1853 settling in Madison Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa where they appear in the 1860 US Census as the "Braderson" family.

According to Luther College Through Sixty Years (Norlie, 1922: 206), Brede attended Luther College only during the 1864-1865 academic year, and so did not receive an A.B. degree. By the time of the 1870 Census he was still working on their farm in Madison Township. In 1871 the family moved to Glenwood Township where Brede Jr. was still living when the 1880 Census was taken.

Brede SANDER, Jr. married Siri Jukam (b. 3 Jan 1857, Bagn, Valders, NOR) on 13 Nov 1883 in Miner County, South Dakota. They had seven children: Clara Julina, Berthea Anetta, Serene Marie, Juel, Anton, Theodor Bernhardt, and Emma Sofia.

Either at about the same time as the portrait above or shortly thereafter, Brede sat for an individual portrait. Unfortunately we do not have the original of this image either.

Brede SANDER, Jr. died on 22 Nov 1905 at the age of only 57 and was buried on the 25th in the SANDER family plot in Belleview Cemetery in Howard, Miner, SD.
