Gravestone: Karen B. (Huseby) SANDER

Brede SANDER's wife, Karen, died on 2 Aug 1868 at the young age of 47. She was buried in the Madison Lutheran Church East Cemetery aka the Vold Cemetery (and the Six Mile Grove Cemetery) in Madison township, Winneshiek County.

Below is the oldest and ironically best picture of her gravestone. Unfortunately the date it was taken is unknown. Notice there is no fence in the background and what I will call the capstone is upside down if you compare with later pictures.

The inscription, which is a fairly common inscription found on Norwegian gravestones, reads, "Her under hviler støvet af Karen B. Sander," which means, "Here under rests the dust [i.e., earthly remains] of Karen B. Sander. Below the death date the remaining inscription reads as follows: "Fred med dit støv, velsignet være dit minde." This means in English, "Peace to your dust, blessed be your memory."

The remainder of the photos show the gravestone in different times and seasons. The first is an undated winter photo. The middle one is from Jul 1993 and the latest from Memorial Day in 2011. Notice the capstone has been repaired and the fence is now chain link.

Gravestone: Brede Bredesen SANDER

Brede SANDER was buried in the Glenwood Lutheran Cemetery in rural Glenwood township. An undated early photograph shows the gravestone alone with very few graves nearby and a lot of tall grass. The inscription is the same as the one on his wife Karen's gravestone. It reads, "Fred med dit støv, velsignet være dit minde." This means in English, "Peace to your dust [i.e., earthly remains], blessed be your memory."

The next two photographs are also undated unfortunately. The first shows the considerable number of graves that have been added to the cemetery since the photograph above and also has some rather large flower bushes in front of the grave. The second has been cropped to highlight the gravestone itself.

Below are photographs of the gravestone from the years 1993-2011:

The gravestone immediately to the left of Brede's stone belongs to his granddaughter, Mabel A. Johnson, who died at the tender age of 10 in 1899. It is curious that one is not able to see this stone in the top picture above. To the left of Mabel's stone is that of Vivian R. (Ask) Johnson, who was the wife of Brede's grandson, Arthur Johnson. Vivian passed away in 1935. Behind and to the right of Brede's stone is the Helmer Williams family gravestone. Helmer was a brother of Sigvart Williams and died in 1930.

Following Norwegian tradition, when Jane gave birth to a baby girl on 28 Aug that year, they named her after her older sister.

UPDATE (6 Mar 2015): The Winneshiek County, IA, GenWeb site has a photo of an older individual gravestone for Klara.

Obituary and Gravestone: Ole E. Bakke

Ole contracted tuberculosis and died at the young age of 45 on 13 Jul 1902. At the time Ellen was pregnant with their youngest, Ole Ernest, who was born a few months later on 27 Oct. The Decorah Posten published his obituary on 18 Jul.

Obituary. Ole E. Bakke (Decorah Posten, 18 Jul 1902). Image courtesy of Verla Williams.

The following English translation was also by Verla Williams:
The 18th July 1902.

Deceased.

Ole E. Bakke, son of Erik Bakke of Washington Prairie, died on Sunday in Elkader, Ia. where he went some weeks ago. He was about 47 years old and leaves his wife and 8 children of which the oldest is 10 and the youngest about 1 year old.

Bakke had been sickly a long time and the sickness developed into tuberculosis finally, ending his life. He had lived the most of his life here in the county. The body was brought to Ossian last Monday and from there it was taken to Washington Prairie for burial. The funeral took place with large participation Wednesday. The deceased leaves behind a large number of friends who deeply regret his early passing.

From a personal friend of the deceased has the "Decorah Posten" received the following:

“Another of them, who exceptionally understood to (win or improve) his fellow human beings, is passed away. It is possible that they who knew Ole E. Bakke best did not correctly understand what honor he had for all those with whom he cultivated friendly company. Ole Bakke was a warm hearted and dependable gentleman. He loved his friends and felt no inclination to find fault with them. This distinguished him therefore, that there always was gladness when he came from his home and mingled with them. Few men have been as beloved as he was. He had faith in his friends and in his straightforward manner he gave accord, that such was. There are greater men than he was but few will be more embraced. Life would be easier for Ole Bakke’s friends if he still were among them; but now has fate willed it otherwise and they can only tell him thanks for what he was. Farewell!"

Ole was buried in the Washington Prairie Lutheran Cemetery in Springfield Township, Winneshiek County.
