Gunne "Jane" Bredesdtr (SANDER) Hanson

Portrait. Jane (SANDER) Hanson (Decorah, IA: Solberg, Bef. 1930). Image courtesy of Verla Williams. Digitally restored by Mark D. Williams.

Jane SANDER was born 10 Nov 1847 in Grue, Hedmark, NOR and was baptized on 23 Jan 1848. The Grue parish records list her as Gunne Bredesdtr.

Jane's mother was Anne Gudmundsdtr. We know that Anne was born on 5 Aug 1821, the daughter of Gudmund Hansen and Anne Arnesdtr and that Anne and Brede were not married. Brede would marry Karen Huseby on 6 Apr 1848, only a few short months after Jane was born.

The SANDER family tradition was that Jane left her mother to go with Brede, Karen, and her half-brothers Brede Jr. and Anton, in order to have a chance at a better life in America.

Charles Hanson Family (c. 1885)

This picture of the Charles Hanson family dates to around 1885. This can be determined since Charles and Jane's youngest daughter, Hannah, who was born in 1887, is not in the picture and Nettie (far left) who was born in 1881, appears to be about 3 or 4 years old.

Additional confirmation that the image is from the early 1880s comes from a Family Tree Magazine article: "According to the Biographies of Western Photographers: A Reference Guide to Photographers Working in the 19th Century American West (Carl Mautz), J. T. Relf operated a photo studio on Water Street in Decorah, Iowa, in 1880."

In 1885, the state of Iowa took a census. As expected Charles Hanson's family listed above, as well as his elderly father, Martin, are all still sharing a household in Madison township, Winneshiek county.

1895 IA Census: Charles Hanson Family

In the following 10 years, several changes occurred in the Hanson household that are reflected in the 1895 Iowa Census. Another daughter, Hannah Maria, was born on 18 August 1887. A few years later, Charles and Jane's oldest daughters married. On 22 December 1891 Clara married Ole P. Hovey and on 19 Mar 1894 Minnie married Peter T. Hovey. The Hoveys' exact relationship to each other, if any, is not currently known. That same year on 26 December 1894, Charles' father Martin passed away and was buried in the Hanson plot in the East Madison (Vold) Cemetery.

Also at about this time or possibly a few years later, the portrait below of the Hanson children was taken. Unfortunately it is not dated.

Clara and Minnie Hanson

This portrait of Clara and Minnie Hanson is also undated, but it appears to have been taken possibly a few years after the Hanson children portrait above.

The following information about the Star Gallery was found at the State Historical Society of Iowa website, IowaHistory.org:
REYNOLDS, BARTLEY J. (1853–1927). Reynolds had a studio in Decorah, Winneshiek County, from about 1892 until 1917. His gallery, called the Star Gallery, was located at 113 W. Water Street (Ben Bear Block). Reynolds' pictures of famous Decorah land sites such as Dug Way, appear in the book Picturesque Decorah which was published by the Decorah Public Opinion newspaper in 1899. He was buried at Phelps Cemetery.

1920 US Federal Census: Charles Hanson Family

By 1920, all of the Hanson children had moved out. Living with Charles and Jane were their eight year old grandson, Charles G. Bothner (his mother, Annetta, had passed away in 1913), and two boarders, Anton H. Ark and Helmer G. Gunhus, who were apparently working on the farm. Their names appear on the next page of the census not included here.

RIDGEWAY
Mrs. Chas. Hanson Dies

Word was received here by friends of the death of Mrs. Chas. Hanson, a long time resident of Winneshiek Co., who passed away at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Chas. Falck of Decorah, Friday morning. Funeral services were held at the United Lutheran church of Decorah at 2:30 Monday afternoon and burial was made in the Volds cemetery.

Mrs. Hanson, nee Jane Sander, was born in Brandvold, Soler, Norway about eighty-two years ago and at the age of five years she came to this country with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Brede Sander. Mrs. Hanson has lived here in Winneshiek County since then except for the time she spent in Canada and South Dakota with her children since the death of her husband. For several years she and her husband, C. M. Hanson lived on the farm now occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Ludwig, about three miles north of Ridgeway and in the Rheinhart residence of this place.

Mrs. Hanson is survived by the following children: Ben and Oscar Hanson of Sisseton, S. D., Mrs. O. P. (Clara) Hovey of Decorah, Mrs. Peter (Minnie) Hovey of Orleans, Mrs. Hans (Hannah) Sollid of Kyel, Canada. Two daughters preceded her in death, Mrs. L. M. (Nettie) Buttner and Clara, who died in infancy.
